Organize your own Satellite Event - use this form to propose one! Include the Satellite Events logo on your web pages! |
CI36 SATELLITE EVENTS are activities associated with CI36, taking place during 2008, and framed and conducted by people around the world.
CI36 wants to encourage YOU to join the international gathering of practitioners, teachers, students, performers and founders in the form of a Satellite Event by creating companion celebrations wherever you are!
(See the maps of currently registered CI36 events around the world!)
Even if you are coming to the CI36 Celebration at Juniata College, you can still help organize a CI36 Satellite Event. Communities, schools, and dance companies worldwide will join CI36 by creating companion celebrations. These events take place throughout 2008 and many will happen simultaneously with the CI36 Celebration at Juniata College June 12-18.
There are 2 different kinds of Satellite Events in the worldwide CI36 celebration - plain Satellite Events and Mulit-Site Events. You can participate in as many of either kind of event as you want, and propose your own.
Your Proposal
We invite you to create your own celebration for the CI36 birthday, anywhere in the world. These events can take place throughout 2008 and/or happen simultaneously with the celebration at Juniata College June 12-18. They might take the form of a: Group Stand, Performance, Lecture, Video Showing, or a structure that you invent. Any existing event (jam, festival) can also be named CI36 Satellite Event. We are excited and intrigued to see the various forms these events will take.
To propose an event, use this form to describe it to the event curators, Daniela Schwartz and Eckhard Mueller. They will get back to you about the proposal as soon as they can. People conducting and participating in satellite events can use the CI36 community site to coordinate and document their events. See our instructions for details about using such a group.
Multi-Site Events
We at Juniata College will celebrate the existence of 36 years of Contact Improvisation with three special events on the weekend of June 14/15. These events are open for simultaneous worldwide participation. You can join one of these Multi-Site satellite events by organizing a group in your home town and coordinating your group's time with the central groups at Juniata. The Worldwide Meeting Planner will help you to find the coordinating time. As soon as you are determined to organize one of these events, please register your group using the event proposal form, and making sure to identify the Multi-Site Event that your local group is joining.

Nancy will also give a talk about the Underscore on Friday June 13. This talk will be videotaped and put on the CI36 website through the weekend under the Satellite Events page for those who wish to review or to discover the phases of the practice.
Please join the Global Underscore Solstice group on the Community Site, to share your harvest, drawings, etc.
Global Underscore Solstice
The Paris Underscore Solstice team has been organizing an annual global Underscore near the summer solstice for the last 8 years. This year, CI36 is happy to join the circle. The Paris Underscore Solstice team will continue to coordinate the event, and CI36 will keep you informed of the progress on our website.
For more info, or to join the practice, contact the Paris Underscore Solstice team directly at: underscoresolstice(at)yahoo.fr - and, below for more details:
Invitation letter from the Paris Underscore Solstice team
Hello dear friends from everywhere,
We are happy that the 8th edition of the "Global Underscore Solstice" will take place as part of the CI36 celebration events, precisely, during the week-end of June 14th and 15th.
The "Global Underscore Solstice", an aware circle around the earth at the solstice time, is a support to connect, in a common practice/language to improvise together at the same time even far away from each other. This "language" is the Underscore. This year, the schedule should be:
- Northampton, Pennsylvania and NY time: saturday 14th june, from 11am to 3pm
- Paris time: saturday 14th june, from 5 pm to 9 pm
- Japan, Australia, New Zealand : sunday 15th june, at night.
We do hope that you are willing to join the adventure again, or for the first time! If so, please contact us at: underscoresolstice(at)yahoo(dot)fr
We will need a first answer before May the 28th ; and after we will ask you for an engagement-confirmation before June 3th. As usual, we will need the name of the coordinator of each group: it'll be easier to communicate. And after June 3th, we will send all the final details.
Again we would like to remind you that we prefer to keep the Underscore Solstice with people that know the Underscore (Full Score Practice). However, in an effort to include others who are not as familiar with the Underscore, or cannot organize people to join them, there are three possible levels of participation one can choose from in joining this practice.
To help, here is a description of the three forms of participation:
- Full Score Practice:
You are a community of dancers in which every dancer present is a part of a serious exploration of the ideas/perceptions/principles operating in Nancys Underscore (and behind that, in her work (and your own work) with Contact Improvisation). This probably means that several of you have studied and/or practiced the Underscore with Nancy directly. Since the event, for you, is about practicing the Underscore, even 1 or 2 dancers who are not familiar with her work will change the quality of the practice. Please feel free to set limits based on experience (for example: someone experienced in the Underscore can go over the score with one or two people beforehand, and they can join depending on the size of the group), and to contact us with any questions...
- Modified Score/Jam:
You are a community of dancers who have various levels of experience with Contact Improvisation and with Nancys work. You may have one person who has studied with Nancy , but in general your experience as a group is in jamming and exploring improvisation. You might feel more resonance with a more open participation. For example, you might open and close with the small dance, and in the dancing section, you warm-up individually, circulate a bit, find a first partner for a contact improvisation dance, and then move into an Open Jam format. You might even end together at the "Final Resolution" time, take sometime for personal reflection, rest, or warm-down, and then have a circle of sharing at the end. The circle might not necessarily be a Harvest in terms of the perceptions of Nancys score, but would be a rich way of sharing your experience.
- Satellite:
You want to participate but are unable to for many reasons: you are alone, you have an obligation, etc. You might join us for the opening and/or closing Small Dance (both would be great!) to sort of click-in to sense the dancing, and to give your support. You know enough about the small dance to be able to explore it deeply for that brief shared time.
We are extremely happy to renovate our yearly meeting with all of you, such a special occasion to be connected and dance together all over our planet!!!
Do not hesitate to write us and thanks in advance for the support and the cooperation each of you will certainly bring.
Looking forward to have news from you, lots of love from the Parisian team: Claire, Marika, Aline & Olivier

- The Intercontinental 36-hour Pass the Dance - starting Saturday June 14, 2008, 12:00 Noon (EST)
-
Saturday, June 14, 2008, 12 pm (noon, EST, New York time)
until Monday, June 16, 2008, 12 am (Sunday midnight)Welcome to CI36s 36-hour Pass-the-Dance in honor of Contact Improvisations 36th Birthday.
The 36-hour Pass-the-Dance at CI36:Normally, a Pass-the-Dance round robin might last for an hour or two in the context of a class or jam. In 1997 at CI25the 25th anniversary celebration for Contact Improvisation, with over 200 people from around the world attendingwe made a special Pass-the-Dance that lasted for 25 hours in honor of CIs 25th year. This simple form had a power and resonance that went beyond what any of us expected. And so were doing it again, at CI36, for 36 hours! (You can click the image on the right to see readable copies of the CI25 Pass-the-Dance log pages -- thanks to Contact Quarterly, these copies are from Vol 23:1, Winter/Spring 98)
What is Pass-the-Dance?
One continuous contact improvisation with an unbroken stream of partners replacing one another in round robin style: A-B, B-C, C-D, D-E The length of each duo is determined by the entrance of the next dancer.
The image:
The image of an eternal flame: a dance kept alive over the years and continents, passed from body to body in a continuous chain.
How well do it at CI36:
Instructions:
-
The first duet will begin at noon on Saturday, June 14, during the Opening Stand of the Global Underscore Solstice.
-
There will be three colored wristbands: one worn by each of the Pass-the-Dance dancers, the other wristband waiting in a pre-decided place in the studio, along with the Pass-the-Dance log book. In a roomful of dancers, you will know the Pass-the-Dance duo by these colored wristbands.
- To enter the dance:
- First become a witness, write or draw in the log book if desired.
- Before entering the dance, sign into the log book with the time youre entering, your name, country, and first CI teacher.
- Put the third colored wristband on
and enter the dance with the last person who went in.
- Dance until youre replaced. (If
there are no witnesses waiting on deck to enter, find someone
to join the dance. You might find a replacement witness before you
enter the dance. We hope that everyone will enter the dance at
some point.)
- Return your wristband to the special
spot. Feel free to write in the log book, witness, or carry on with
your jamming elsewhere in the space.
Keep checking in with the dance at regular intervals during the 36 hours to make sure to keep the flame alive. Youre welcome to go in more than once, giving priority to those who havent gone in yet.

Enjoy!

Join the 36-minute Stand group on the community site to share your writings, photos, videos, etc, from the event!
Instructions for LEADING A STAND [from Karen Nelson]:
Ive been asked, because of my fondness for the stand, to write an introduction/instruction on how to lead this practice on the occasion of CI36s 36-minute stand to be led on-site by Steve Paxton (the originator of the practice and of Contact Improvisation) for others around the world who will be joining via a Satellite event.
-
-
Assuming you are using Steves transcript from the CI Sourcebook (included here):
How to lead a stand:
Its helpful to understand the influence that experience with the stand can have in allowing the freedom of dancing with another person. It is a very formal practice that trains awareness to watch sensations like: status of balance, falling, cause and effect of reflexive movement through the skeleton, natural breathing, heartbeat, circulation, thoughts, and emotions. Its the active stillness practice in contact, wherein the privacy of our own body-mindwe can prepare awareness of our reflexes to meet another dancers reflexes in the unpredictable atmosphere of a dance.
Steves simple instructions, for example, to make the smallest stretch even smaller, invite us to repeatedly experience infinite impressions of mind and body with the question: where exactly is all this happening, this time, now?
Dive deep into your experience of doing very little. Let go into your skeletal balance. Relax as much as possible without collapsing. Feel gravity and feel the support of the earth coming back up through your bones. Rest, do nothing. Notice sensations. Let go of knowing. Do nothing for a long time. Dance from that place.
[Karen Nelson, Goldendale, WA]

- April 25, Santiago, Chile: Trayecto 3.6 km
-
An idea that came out to celebrate the CI 36, was Trayecto 3.6 km. The proposal was to form a group of people and dance with contact improvisation over 3.6 kilometers in the city. Following a route that crossed many important streets of downtown. The route began in the Huerfanos bridge and concluded in the peatonal Condell bridge.
All were invited to participate, the only requirement was to attend the previous call in which we did specify the route to cross, the exposition of the passage, the slogans and all the doubts that arised at that moment.
It was not needed to have experience in Contact, just being open to receive the proposal and to live it altogether.
The event took place on April 25th at 4 pm.
