Contact Improvisation
by admin published Jul 27, 2011 last modified Aug 03, 2011 03:13 PM — filed under: , ,
I love this dance/sport, particularly spontaneous, exquisite cooperation that can happen. I'm interested in how to foster it. This section includes some general info CI, details about the DC CI jam (a DC-metro area CI gathering that's been happening weekly since around 1980), and descriptions of topics and explorations that have helped me find my way.

Our Jam and the Underscore
by admin published Jul 28, 2011 last modified Mar 07, 2015 06:45 PM — filed under: , , ,
The dc jam has been practicing an ensemble improv recipe, called the Underscore, on the first Sunday of the month since December, 2003. It started as an experiment in making the jam more accessible to everyone, by providing some structure that fits jamming. It stuck, big time. Not only does it provide some orientation for newcomers, but many - new and experienced - have found that it helps to foster a great jam, during the Underscore and during our regular jams, as well.

Some Jam Discoveries

I've been a central tender of the Washington, DC jam for many years now. At various points those of us caring for it struggled with fostering a robust jam, one that provides a good situation for newcomers and experienced dancers, alike. The jam has tended to be solidly attended, with lots of intent, sustained dancing, for a while now. I think that's in part due to some ingredients we've deliberately introduced, and can identify.
