Underscore Talk-Through
The Underscore talk-through is a description of the Underscore. Taking in the talk-through is part of the process of becoming acquainted with the score.
The Underscore includes a clear description of the progressive layers of participation as well as elementary phenomena that typically happen when showing up to engage in collaborative movement improvisation. This Underscore description – the "talk-through" – is part of the activity which participants take in beforehand.
Here's one of the most complete videos available of Nancy presenting her talk-through, from 2020: Unpacking the Underscore on Vimeo
In this video Nancy provides insights on the Underscore's details and what brought her to develop it: An Emergent Underscore: a conversation with Nancy Stark Smith, London - YouTube
Here are photos of posters that we use in our talk-throughs. (Hopefully I'll get higher-quality posters and pics online eventually.) The descriptions include glyphs as well as text, providing visual as well as verbal cues, all a part of the practical and artistic endeavor.
The pics are available from Google Photos as well.
